Too pricey; too pretentious
I'm sorry, but this place just doesn't do it for me. This is one of those "food as art" joints, so your appetizer platter will have a dinky pile of pistachios and expertly crumbled bits of cheese, but the entire thing with all of its items constitutes maybe one actual serving. Mercantile prides itself on being a wine bar and their selection is far-reaching, but it is overpriced for the serving size. Ultimately, Mercantile just tries too hard to be bohemian while still charging bourgeois prices. Avoid.

Cute
Ducked in during a rain shower, had a perfectly delicious croque Madame and a couple glasses or wine. Evening manager was so so nice as to lend my husband his umbrella to run and get his car.

Disapointing
I really had big hopes for this place and want to love it but they let me down everytime. They have an item on the menu called the simple sandwich that is great and has 4 different types. Well everytime I go there or recommend the sandwich to someone else they never have them! The last 3 times I went I was embarrassed I suggested it and I left extremely disapointed. Supposedly they only make a set number a day and they won't make them to order. Why have this item on the menu if you can't offer it to your customers?? This place really could be great but someone needs to figure out how to run a consistent kitchen. Don't know if I'll return after being disapointed 3 times in a row!
