cheap and delicious, no frills, but fun
delicious french dips and egg custard that is one of the best buys in town. very classic downtown atmosphere close to chinatown. they have their system down pat, so don't screw it up ;)

Do the Double Dip
Best sandwiches around. I prefer the lamb, but the pork and beef are fantastic too. Side dishes okay, especially the potato salad. Never tried dessert. It's insane, so come prepared to be patient. The servers are unbelievably fast and good, so tip generously. I always get an extra sandwich to eat on the plane home.

Great french dip
Philippe's has the best french dip in town. This place is an absolute LA landmark. I believe the place used to be a factory on the first floor and the second floor was used as a boarding house -- it still retains the old time feeling. The second floor feels like an abandoned school house. It gets VERY hectic during lunch hour so you'd better know what you want by the time you get to the front of the line. The lamb and pork dips are really yummy with a bit of crumpled blue cheese on top (sounds weird, but it's very tasty).
