Hama still knows how to do it!
Wow, Hama Sushi is a true landmark of Venice Beach. It goes to show that they must be doing something right to be here all of these years! Hama is a family favorite of ours, from my older relatives down to my kids! Our favorite dishes are the Black Cod, Lobster Dynamite, Calamari Salad and the Devil Rolls. There's always something for someone on the menu as it is quite extensive! The staff has always been friendly. The valet attendant assists us inside when we bring our aunt who uses a wheelchair. All in all, Hama is a great Japanese/Sushi restaurant that we recommend to our friends all the time. Weekends can get busy, so making reservations would be good!

one of the best since the 80s!
I remember going to Hama sushi back in the 80s when they had mtv projected on the wall of the outdoor patio. It's still amazing, and one of the only sushi bars i go to in L.A. ( even if they arnt blasting the Bangles anymore, heh)

it's a SUSHI restaurant not KFC, dude.
People who order Teriyaki chicken get what they pay for any way you slice it, it's overly salted, sweet chicken happily appeasing those who otherwise only eat imitation crab, mayo, and smoked salmon when they brag to their friends that they LOVE Japanese food. So forget that first review. We rode our bikes through the canals, chatted with the valet (who happily kept an eye on our mode of transport), drank a beer at the bar while waiting to be sat, and enjoyed some damn fine sushi. We sat at the bar and ordered Omakase (which means that the chef decides for you). I don't eat Salmon Roe, Mackerel, or Eeeeeeel- no worries. No attitutde, no sweat. We had beer, the chef drank with us. We had nothing and everything special simple sushi packed with fresh, qualitatively superior flavors. This spot is unpretentious, authentic, and probably burdoned by a large party of club-goers grabbin a snobby bite on the way to someplace FABU in West Hollywood- although on any given day Hama might be considered "trendy" don't kid yourself it's a classic. Not the type of place to come with a large party sit at the bar (its a long one), enjoy plenty of time to devour a delicious meal, and savour the consequences.

Unpleasant experience
I don't even know where to begin. Our server seemed to be having an off night, she was "out to lunch". The sushi was relatively timely but the teriyaki took 40 minutes. We were a party of seven with four children all but one eat sushi. We ordered sushi, two teriyaki platters and an order of chicken skewers for the three year old. The server never bothered to tell us that they were skewered with jalipeno type peppers and wouldn't be a good choice. When it came I explained i couldn't give this to her and asked if it was possible to accomodate the youngest. She was rude and and snipped that it would take a long time. i promptly told her nevermind. The tuna in my hand roll was either from a blender or the sushi chef didn't know when to stop chopping. Either way is was far from the best. The happy hour prices are decent but their regular menu prices are pretty high for the quality and amount of food. I think you should get more than a half of chicken breast for the $12.50 teriyaki platter. The sushi menu offered seemed very limited. All in All after spending over $100.00 we left there and drove back into downtown LA to eat because everyone was still hungry. I would have attempted to order more out of convenience if the service wasn't so slow. Not child friendly. Food was poor quality. Servers are Rude.

Try the Red Devil!
This place has some very exotic rolls, but don't be afraid to try them! We had a Red Devil (which was soooo spicy that the guys at our table asked the next table if they could drink their water!), and a roll with Strawberries on top. Those are the only ones I remember out of 5, but they were all really good and fresh. The scene is hip and trendy, but not too trendy. Will definately go back!
