Gardens of Taxco

I read so many rave reviews on Yelp that I was expecting much more than the rather bland Mexican-American food we were served. We went with the early diner coupon and you do get a lot of food, It's edible and then forgettable and I wouldn't go there again. Probably it was naive of me to expect more quality. The service is very prompt and polite. The waiters have this shtick that they played up at other tables, not so much to my gentleman friend and myself (because we looked older or...?) I'm not quite sure what it is that so many people find charming. I guess it's OK if the company you're with is the main thing, IF you're a foodie, this place isn't for you.

I visit LA last week and asked a friend who lived there where to go for some great Mexican food. He immediately recommended Gardens. The waiter informed us there were no menus, as the food was made to order Mexico City style, where you tell them what kind of meat you want, and they tell you what they have. I had a chicken dish with a creamy cilantro sauce which was out of this world. Also, what the waiter failed to mention was that this was a five course meal! for starters we were given quesadillas, followed by a meatball soup and enchiladas. After the entree we were given a bananas and cream dessert that was perfect to end on, with a shot of sweet sherry. Next time I'm back in town that will be my first (and maybe every) stop for dinner. P.S. Jimi (sp?), the guitar man was excellent too. Make sure to tip him, because he works hard!

I have been coming to Gardens since 1975, when it was first discovered by someone in show I was doing in town. It quickly became, and has stayed, my favorite restaurant in the world (literally). The experiences I've had there are always warm and wonderful. I try and go at least once on every trip I make back to LA. It doesn't get better than this.
