I don't know how this place is so highly reviewed. I went here with my husband and son since we were staying down the street. The place is very large and we were seated upstairs. I don't know if this is why we had poor service, or if it's just the norm to seat people and then not take their order for 20 minutes. The decor was tacky. It took almost an hour to get our food. My chicken enchiladas was one enchilada and black beans that were more water than beans. The rice was old and crunchy. My son got a 'kids' quesadilla that was so saturated with grease that the tortilla was transparent with soaked through grease. Also it was twice the size of a dinner pate. My toddler didn't even want it. I'm guessing the thing sat in a puddle of grease for at least 40 minutes prior to coming out to our table. The one thing this place had going for it was a very clean bathroom. Other than that I have nothing else good to say. There are so many wonderful places to get Mexican food in this city, El Cholo on Wilshire is not one of them.

I have been an El Cholo fan since the early 70's and I'm especially fond of the LA El Cholo's on Western. I have never once had a bad drink experience there. I had an extremely bad reaction to the tequila or the margarita mix that was used the last two times I was at this location. Why try twice? I thought it was a fluke the first time. Evidently, not. Food is consistent and good depending on your experience w/Mexican food (sooo many authentic places in LA) but LOVE their very simple, and again, consistent Nachos and usually the margaritas. YUM.
